GULMOHAR FRITTERS

Gulmohar tree is a flowering tree, native to Madagascar. Its scientific name is Delonix Regia. This beautiful tree has fern-like soft leaves and vibrant red-orange flowers which fully bloom in the summer. In many tropical parts of the world it is grown as an ornamental tree. In English, it is known by many names like royal poinciana, flamboyant, phoenix flower, flame of the forest or flame tree. In India it is commonly known as Gulmohar, Gulmohar or May flower trees. In West Bengal and Odisha it is called Krishna Chura.
Gulmohar is gifted with many medicinal properties. It can be used as antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-malarial, gastro protective, cardio protective along with wound healing properties. It’s leaves have anti diabetic properties, using it’s methanol extract significantly lowers the blood sugar.
Can we eat Gulmohar flowers? Yes, it’s edible. There are four fiery red orange petals and one petal is not solid orange but yellow streaked with red morse cod like rows and this petal is known as Rani ( queen ) petal. And these tangy petals are edible and many of us , have enjoyed eating these petals in our childhood. Today, I am taking you all back down the memory lane. Prepared fritters from this beautiful flowers.


Preparation time: 5 minutes
Cooking time: 10 minutes
Serves: 2 persons
Ingredients:
10-15 Gulmohar petals
1/2 cup gram flour
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp red chilli powder
1/8 tsp asafoetida
1/2 tsp carom seeds
Salt to taste
1 tsp oil
Oil for frying
Method:
1. Separate petals, wash and pat dry with kitchen towel.
2. Add all dry spices and salt in gram flour and prepare a lumpfree fritter batter by adding water. Then add carom seeds and mix.
2. Heat oil, add one tsp hot oil in batter before making fritters.
3. Dip the petals in prepared batter and deep fry fritters from both sides.
4. Serve hot
