Cape Gooseberry Relish (Rasbhari Chutney)

Cape Gooseberry, also known as Rasbhari or Golden Berry, is a small, orange-colored fruit that’s sweet and tart in flavor. These small, round fruits (about 1-2 cm in diameter) resemble miniature yellow tomatoes and are encased in a papery husk. Native to Chile and Peru, they’re now cultivated in many parts of the world.
Cape Gooseberries are rich in vitamins A and C, potassium, and antioxidants, making them a nutritious addition to various dishes.
They can be consumed fresh as a fruit or snack and are also used in jams, pickles, desserts, salads, smoothies, and yogurt.

Cooking Time: 10 minutes
Serves: 1 person

Ingredients:

  • 100 grams Cape Gooseberries
  • 1 tsp ghee
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp chopped ginger
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • Salt to taste

Method:

  1. Remove the husk, wash, and chop the gooseberries.
  2. Heat ghee, add cumin seeds, and let them splutter.
  3. Add chopped gooseberries and ginger; sauté for a while.
  4. Cover and cook until the gooseberries turn soft and mushy.
  5. Add red chili powder, coriander powder, sugar, and salt; mix and cook for a couple of minutes.
  6. Turn off the heat and enjoy this sweet and tangy chutney with meals or snacks.
