COCONUT CHUTNEY (with split gram)

This chutney majorly consumed with South Indian cuisine. Prepared with coconut and split gram dal(chana dal). Though roasted chick peas(chana/daliya) are used instead of chana dal. But I always made with chana dal .
According to South Indian cuisine in this chutney proportion of coconut is more but I have made as per my family taste, I have added dal more.

Preparation time : 15 minutes
Cooking time : 5 minutes
Serves : 4 persons

Ingredients :

1 cup split gram
1 tsp oil
1/2 fresh coconut
2 green chillies
Salt to taste
For temparing :
1 tbsp oil
1/2 tsp split and skinned black dal (udad dal)
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
1/2 tsp cumin seeds
Pinch of asafoetida
8-10 curry leaves

Method:

  1. Heat oil and roast dal till aroma arises. Then add sufficient water and soak it for 3-4 hours.
  2. Grate the coconut and chop the chillies.
  3. Once the dal is soaked properly, drain out water and grind it along with coconut and chillies. Transfer it in a bowl.
  4. Heat oil, add udad dal, mustard seeds, cumin seeds.let them spluttter, then add asafoetida and curry leaves and turn off the heat.
  5. Add this temepring to chutney. Serve with any South Indian dish.

Note:

  1. Can add ginger and coriander in chutney.
