MASALA PAV

Street foods are immensely popular in India and majority of Indian population enjoy street food often. Masala pav is one of the dishes in the top street food list.
Masala pav is spicy and delicious street food which is very popular in Mumbai. This spicy street food is prepared with butter toasted pav ( Indian name for buns or dinner rolls) and delicious onion tomato masala.

Preparation time: 10minutes
Cooking time: 20minutes
Serves: 4 persons

Ingredients:

8 buns (I have used wheat buns)
For masala:
4 onions
2 capsicums
4 tomatoes
1/2 cup finely chopped coriander
1 tbsp garlic paste
1 tbsp red chilli powder
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1 tbsp pav bhaji masala
1 tbsp lemon juice
Salt to taste
2 tbsp butter
For Pav(buns):
4 tbsp butter
4 tsp pavbhaji masala
Finely chopped coriander
For serving:
Chopped onions
Lemon wedges

Method:

  1. Heat butter and add onions and saute it till they become translucent. Add garlic paste after a few minutes.

2. Further add chopped capsicum and saute them for couple of minutes.

3. Add dry spices and sauté more for 1-3 minutes.

4. It’s time to add tomatoes and salt. Let it cook till tomatoes become mushy.

5. Add 1/4 cup of water and let it cook. Mash the masala with a masher. Also add lemon juice.

6. After a few minutes of cooking, masala become thick and butter comes on top . Lastly add coriander and turn off the heat. Our masala is ready. Transfer it in another bowl and keep aside.

7. For making masala pav, cut the buns from the center. Add some butter in the same pan. Add 1/2 tsp pavbhaji masala, some coriander. Toast buns from both sides.

8. Add prepared masala on one side of buns. Cover second side of buns and toast a little from both sides.

9. Add some masala on top. Sprinkle some onions and coriander. Serve hot with fresh onions and lemon wedges.

Note:

1. We can also use chilli paste by soaking dry red chillies and further grind into fine paste with garlic cloves to make it spicy.

2. You can add some boiled and mashed potatoes in masala.
