MATKI / MOTH CURRY (No Onion-Garlic)

A wholesome and protein-rich curry made with matki (moth beans), cooked without onion and garlic. This semi-dry preparation is light, nutritious, and pairs wonderfully with roti or as a side for a complete meal.

Soaking time: 7–8 hours (overnight)
Cooking time: 20 minutes
Serves: 4

Ingredients:

1 cup matki / dew beans

2 tbsp peanuts ( soaked for 1–2 hours)

1 tbsp oil

1 tbsp red chilli powder

1 tbsp cumin–coriander powder

½ tsp turmeric powder

A pinch of asafoetida

Salt to taste

½ lemon

Method:

Soak matki overnight (7–8 hours). Soak peanuts for 1–2 hours.

Heat oil in a pan. Add asafoetida and 1 teaspoon red chilli powder.

Add soaked matki and peanuts. Stir well.

Add water and salt. Bring to a boil. Lower the flame, cover, and cook until beans are soft.

Add turmeric powder, remaining red chilli powder, and cumin–coriander powder. Cook for a few minutes.

Finish with lemon juice, mix well, and switch off the flame.
