SABUDANA KHICHDI

Sabudana Khichdi is a delicious recipe prepared from Sabudana/Tapioca pearls/sago, potatoes, peanuts. Sabudana khichdi is one of the popular fasting dish from Western India, especially in Gujarat, Maharastra during Navratri, Shivratri and Janmastami, when people are fasting. This gluten free and vegan dish is not only a fasting food but also one of the popular street food in Maharastra and Indore, served as breakfast or a snack.


Preparation time: 5 minutes
Cooking time: 10 minutes
Soaking time: 5-6 hours
Serves: 2 persons

Ingredients:
1 cup sabudana
3/4 cup water
1/4 cup roasted peanuts (roughly crushed)
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp cumin seeds
1 sprig curry leaves
2 green chillies(splits)
1 potato (boiled & diced)
1/2 lemon
2 tbsp finely chopped coriander
2 tbsp ghee/oil
Salt to taste

Method:

  1. Take one broad bowl, add sabudana , wash and rinse with water for 2-3 times to remove excess starch. Then add 3/4 cup water and soak them for about 5-6 hours.
  2. To check if sabudana is properly soaked or not, press one sago pearl between fingers. If it is easily mashed, it’s ok else sprinkle some water and soak for more half an hour. Then transfer soaked sabudana to sieve to remove water if any.
  3. Now transfer soaked and drain sabudana in broad vessel, add salt , sugar and crushed peanuts in it and mix well with light hand.
  4. Now heat ghee/oil in a nonstick pan. Add cumin seeds and once they splutter add curry leaves and green chillies and sautƩ for a while. Add boiled potatoes and sautƩ for a couple of minutes.
  5. It’s time to add, sabudana, peanut mixture. Mix it well. Cover and cook on a low flame till sabudana turns translucent.
  6. Lastly add lemon juice and coriander, mix and turn off the heat.
  7. Serve hot.

Note:

  1. You can sprinkle some farali mixture over it.
