GOPAL KALA /DAHI KALA

Gopal kala also known as dahi kala is savory dish prepared on Janmastami festival. ‘Gopal’ is the name of the Krishna and ‘Kala’ means ‘mixture’ in Marathi. Gopal kala is prepared with flattened rice (poha) and curd as a key ingredients and can be prpepared quickly and easily.
In Janmastmi celebration along with makhana pag, panjiri, gopal kala is also prepared and also filled in Handi for dahi handi celebration,later served and distributed as Prasad.

Preparation time : 5 minutes
Cooking time : 5 minutes
Serves : 2

Ingredients:

1 cup flattened rice
1/2 cup curd
2 tbsp.finely chopped cucumber
2 finely chopped gteen chillies
1/2 tsp grated ginger
1 tbsp grated fresh coconut
1 tbsp fine chopped coriander
1 tbsp pomegranate seeds
For tempering :
1 tsp ghee
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
1/2 tsp cumin seeds
7-8 curry leaves
Pinch of asafoetida
Salt to taste

Method:

  1. Wash flattened rice under running water and transfer it in a colander.

2. Further transfer flattened rice in a mixing bowl and add all chopped vegetables.

3. Add curd and salt too. Mix well with a light hand.

4. Heat ghee and add mustard seeds and cumin seeds, let them splutter, then add curry leaves and asafoetida and turn off the heat. Add this tempering to prepared mixture.

5. Serve.
